Through confronting the grief of death in old age and through studying the thoughts and sensitivities that can help us cope with the problems of modern life, we aim to cultivate a rich view of humanity and to deepen our insights thereof.
The pain and suffering with which the field of grief care is involved consists of events such as unforeseen accidents, illnesses, failures, betrayals, poverty, war, disasters, or the death of loved ones. These can happen to anyone, regardless of lifestyle or any efforts made to the contrary, and however unreasonable they may seem.
Above all, how we accept the inevitability of death has been a problem for human beings ever since ancient times. These days medical interventions and complicated social situations are additional considerations which mean that we and those who are bereaved have an increased range of choices and decisions to make in this respect.
This kind of grief is not a “personal issue.” The aim is for students to have an opportunity to consider the topic as a group on the premise that it is common suffering for everyone.

生老病死の悲嘆＜grief＞に向き合うことを通して、現代のいのちの諸問題に対処し得る思考と豊かな人間観が養われることをめざします。

グリーフケアの視野における苦としては、不慮の事故、病気、挫折、裏切り、貧困、戦争、災害、愛する人の死などがあり、それらは自分の努力や生き方とは無関係に、理不尽ともいえる事態が生きているあいだ誰にも起こりうるものです。
このような生老病死の苦しみをいかに受け止めるかということは、古来から変わらぬ人間の大きな課題ですが、現代では様々な医療的介入や複雑な社会情勢も相まって、本人や遺される人たちの選択肢も多様化してきました。
そしてこれは決して「個人的問題」ではなく皆に共通する苦しみであるということを前提に、講義では広く社会的な苦しみについて触れ、ともに考える場をもちたいと思います。
