To develop an understanding of the philosophical thought referred to as “public philosophy,” while examining a range of public issues in contemporary society.
In recent years, public philosophy has become something of a boom. Unlike what is often perceived as “(pure) philosophy,” which is thought to deal with abstruse and obscure topics, public philosophy examines social issues that are familiar to us and that sometimes have a direct impact on our everyday lives. In this course, you will acquire basic knowledge of philosophical ideas known as public philosophy and, on the basis of this knowledge, aim to think critically about various public issues. In addition to lectures on public philosophy, the course will include individual work and group discussions. You are therefore expected to understand that active participation is required when enrolling in this course.

昨今、公共哲学は一種のブームとなっている。公共哲学は、いわゆる晦渋なテーマを扱っているように思われがちな「（純粋）哲学」とは異なり、我々にとって身近な、しかも時に我々の生活に直接的に関係する社会問題を検討するものである。本授業では、公共哲学として知られる哲学思想の基本的な知識を身につけ、それらをもとに公共における諸問題を考えることを目指す。なお、授業では、講義による公共哲学のレクチャーだけでなく、受講者の個人ワークやグループディスカッションを行う。そのため積極的な参加を必要とすることを理解の上、履修いただきたい。
