This is an elective required course that is positioned at the core of education in the Department of Community Development. Based on each faculty member's research theme, students will read specialized literature, conduct fieldwork, and practice in the field in small classes.
The main theme of this class is the urban and regional sociology of “Tokyo,” exploring mobility and community formation, boundary construction, belonging and identity, image of place, urban redevelopment, tourism and symbolic consumption, urban festivals and events, urban ethnicity, and more.
In the spring semester, students will review literature on urban and regional sociology and conduct collaborative research by being asked to freely set up a region, place, or comparable city related to “Tokyo” (Tachikawa, Urayasu, and Fukuoka in 2023). Acquire basic knowledge of fieldwork methods such as observation methods and literature review.
The “Tachikawa Project” is a voluntary inter-college type practical project in which fieldwork is conducted through participation in summer festivals and disaster prevention events organized by the residents' association of a metropolitan apartment complex, providing a completely different experience from a one-time hearing (one-shot survey).
A camp is held during the summer vacation. Seminar students select a city or region in Japan from an urban sociological perspective (“Creative City” Kanazawa in 2024). Presentation of individual research concepts, fieldwork, and get-togethers will be held.

In the fall semester, students conduct individual research on themes based on their own interests and write a seminar paper. If students work diligently, they can make 30-50% progress on their graduation thesis during their third year.

The impact of urban redevelopment on regional identity: A case study of the redevelopment of the Shakujii Koen Station area
The potential of libraries as third places: A case study of Musashino Place
The accumulation of “concept cafes” in Akihabara and the transformation of the area's image
...Other themes related to sociology can be freely chosen. Other themes than “cities” and “regions” are also acceptable.

コミュニティ政策学科での教育の中心に位置づけられる選択必修科目である。各教員の研究テーマに即して、少人数クラスで専門文献の講読や現地調査、現場実習などを行う。
本クラスでは、「都市・東京」の社会学をメインテーマに、移動（モビリティ）とコミュニティ形成、境界の構築、帰属とアイデンティティ、場所イメージ、都市再開発、観光と記号消費、都市祭礼・イベント、都市エスニシティ等について探究する。

春学期には、都市社会学・地域社会学に関する文献をレビューし、「都市・東京」に関わる地域・場所、または比較可能な都市を自由に設定してもらって共同研究を行う（2023年度は立川、浦安、福岡）。観察法や文献調査などフィールドワークの方法について基礎を身につける。
任意参加のインターカレッジ型の実践プロジェクト（「立川プロジェクト」）では、都営団地自治会と協力し、自治会主催の夏祭りや防災イベントへの継続的な参加を通じたフィールドワークを行っている。1回限りのヒアリング（ワンショットサーベイ）とは全く異なる体験ができる。
夏休みには合宿を行う。都市社会学的な観点から、国内の都市や地域をゼミ生が選ぶ（2024年度は「創造都市」金沢）。個人研究の構想発表会、フィールドワーク、懇親会などを行う。

秋学期は各々の問題関心に基づいたテーマを設定して個人研究を行い、ゼミ論文を作成する。真剣にとりくめば3年生のうちに卒業論文の30-50％くらいまで進めることができる。
