【Course Objectives】

This is an elective required course that is positioned at the core of education in the Department of Community Development. Based on each faculty member's research theme, students will read specialized literature, conduct fieldwork, and practice in the field in small classes.
This seminar is based on the theme of “community development”. Until now, “community development” has been the subject of study in the fields of science and technology. However, in the current climate, where the uniqueness and sustainability of communities are emphasized, there is a need for a liberal arts education that can interpret the context of a community and re-establish social relationships. The aim of this seminar is to produce human resources who can contribute to community development in both practical and research terms.

【Course Contents】

The basic activities of the seminar are as follows.
1) To acquire the logical thinking and problem-solving skills that are essential for working adults, each student writes a short essay on a topic of their own interest.
2) To gain practical experience in community development, students participate in community development activities for 4 to 5 days during the summer holidays in rural villages and towns in Nagano Prefecture.
The following is an image of the annual schedule.
Spring semester: Planning and conceptualizing research themes / Learning about summer fieldwork and community development projects
Summer vacation: Research related to individual research / Community development activities in the field
Autumn semester: Research reports and writing papers
In addition to this, there are also voluntary training camps organized by the students (in the past, these have been held in areas such as Amami Oshima, Beppu/Oita, Shimanami Kaido, Osaka, Minami Sanriku, Hamadori(Fukushima), Tokachi, and Taiwan).
