【Course Objectives】

In today's global capitalist society, poverty and social exclusion are widespread, but in this context, the social solidarity economy, which is based on various solidarity/connections in local areas, is attracting international attention today as an alternative economic model. In this seminar, we will conduct fieldwork with NPOs and cooperatives that are the driving forces behind the creation of the social solidarity economy in local areas, and aim to learn in a real-life manner about the methods and conditions of community development that create solidarity/connections.

【Course Contents】

In this seminar, we have conducted interviews with the local cooperative Muchachaen (Ehime Prefecture), which has spun strong solidarity between local producers and urban consumers, Sento Tarui (Gifu Prefecture), which implements a domestic version of fair trade, and various NPOs (Saitama Youth Support Network, NPO Cultural Learning Cooperative Network, Workers Collective Association, NPO Good!), which provide a place for young people with various problems and create jobs at the same time, as examples of social solidarity economy in Japan. In 2025, we plan to visit the local cooperative Muchachaen in Seiyo City, Ehime Prefecture during the summer or fall vacation as an example of local social solidarity economy and hold a seminar camp. We will learn about the various forms of solidarity (solidarity between producers and consumers, solidarity between farmers and fishermen, collaboration with local governments, and international agricultural solidarity through the acceptance of Vietnamese technical intern trainees) that Muchachaen, which is based on organic citrus production, has through actual mandarin orange harvesting experience and visits to various business sites. Meanwhile, during the spring and fall semesters, we are also considering visiting community development sites in the Tokyo metropolitan area run by NPOs and cooperatives, based on the participants' requests. This will make it possible to compare community development in urban and rural areas. As part of preparations for the visit to Muchachaen, we would also like to plan interview surveys of organic farmers in Ogawamachi and agricultural experiences. Finally, at the end of the fall semester, we will also hold presentations at the Community Welfare Society and joint seminars with other universities.
