【Course Objectives】

This course aims to teach students to:

•Develop a deeper understanding of wellbeing
•Understand resilience and its benefits
•Develop an understanding of the GEM approach to developing well-being and increasing happiness
•Assess the effectiveness of the GEM principles
•Build confidence in expressing personal opinions and experiences
•Develop autonomy, creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration skills

【Course Contents】

This course is based on positive psychology. It focuses on resilience and the teaching of GEM (Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness) principles in schools, professional sports associations, and in the workplace. Suicide is a societal problem in Japan and around the world. Resilience is what gives people the psychological strength to cope with stress and hardship. It is a mental reservoir of strength that people are able to call on in times of need to carry them through difficult times. GEM has been found to increase happiness and well-being levels in a wide variety of situations. This course will focus on the theory supporting the GEM benefits and apply the techniques in and out of class to test their effectiveness.
