To develop your own opinions on issues over ethnic minorities by learning the concepts and theories of ethnicity and applying them. To develop your own ideas through discussions and give constructive feedbacks to the ideas of others.
In this course, students will learn about ethnicity and its related theories and concepts by exploring the history and experiences of Japanese Americans. In particular, we will study the history and society of Hawaii, which has a diverse range of ethnic groups including Japanese Americans, and look into approaches to various issues on ethnic minorities. We will discuss ethnicity from various levels such as individual, community, society, nation, and international relations.

エスニシティやそれに関連する理論と概念について、日系アメリカ人の歴史と経験を手掛かりに学びます。とりわけ、日系人を含む多様なエスニック・グループを擁するハワイの歴史と社会を学びながら、エスニック・マイノリティをめぐる諸問題へのアプローチを検討します。個人、コミュニティ、社会、国家、国際関係など、様々なレベルからエスニシティをとらえます。
