The objective of this course is to learn about the history and key concepts of global mobility, develop one's own perspectives on issues concerning emigration and immigration, and refine one's ideas through discussions while providing constructive comments on others' opinions.
This course examines international migration and related theories and concepts through the history and experiences of Japanese Americans who migrated to Hawaiʻi and the continental United States. Using migration from Japan to the United States as a central case, the course explores how migrants have been positioned within host societies and how they have lived as ethnic minorities in specific historical contexts.
Drawing on concepts such as migration and mobility, settler colonialism, diaspora, and ethnicity, the course addresses the formation of prewar immigrant communities, the experiences of Japanese Americans during World War II, and postwar transformations in social status, including redress movements. In addition, topics such as the experiences of Okinawan migrants, labor movements and anti-communism, and relationships with Indigenous peoples are examined in order to analyze how migrants have been situated within broader structures of the state, the economy, and colonialism.
Rather than simply comparing the continental United States and Hawaiʻi, this course treats the asymmetry of comparison and underlying power relations themselves as objects of critical inquiry. Through this approach, the course aims to cultivate perspectives for critically understanding ethnic minorities with migrant backgrounds across multiple levels, including the individual, community, society, and the state.

国際移動の歴史や関連する概念を学び、移民の送出や受け入れをめぐる問題に対して自身の意見を持つ。ディスカッションを通じて自身の考えを発展させたり、他者の意見に建設的なコメントを与えたりする。
The objective of this course is to learn about the history and key concepts of global mobility, develop one's own perspectives on issues concerning emigration and immigration, and refine one's ideas through discussions while providing constructive comments on others' opinions.
本講義では、国際移動やそれに関連する理論と概念について、ハワイやアメリカ本土に渡った日系人の歴史と経験を手がかりに学びます。日本からアメリカへの移動を例として、移民がホスト社会の中でどのように位置づけられ、エスニック・マイノリティとして生きてきたのかを、歴史的文脈の中で検討します。
具体的には、移民や移動、セトラーコロニアリズム、ディアスポラ、エスニシティといった概念を用いながら、戦前の移民社会の形成、戦時下の日系アメリカ人の経験、戦後の社会的地位の変化や補償運動を扱います。さらに、沖縄系移民の経験、労働運動と反共主義、先住民との関係といった論点を通して、移民が国家、経済、植民地主義的な構造の中でどのように配置されてきたのかを考察します。
本講義では、アメリカ本土とハワイを単純に比較するのではなく、比較の非対称性や権力関係そのものを問いの対象とすることで、移民をルーツに持つエスニック・マイノリティを個人、コミュニティ、社会、国家といった複数のレベルから批判的に捉える視点を養うことも目指します。
