Students will learn the meaning and examples of redesigning a town using various resources in the town (closed schools, vacant houses, stores, parks, shopping streets, streets, etc.), the town as a whole, and the town's spaces. They will learn design methods, theories, and examples that can only be achieved in the "humanities (community studies)" field.
Let's think of the town as a text (a book). Just as each line of a book has meaning, the things and events in the town have some kind of meaning. For example, why are there books on the shelves facing the outside of a convenience store? Why is there an empty space next to a high-rise apartment building? We will deepen our knowledge of the town and consider ways to redesign the book that is the town using all its resources (things, events, people, places). Let's explain this in more detail. Can we use and renovate the various resources in the town, even things that are sometimes considered negative resources (closed schools, vacant houses, vacant stores, and rarely used parks), roads and waterfronts that we usually walk through, and even the entire town or the margins and gaps in the town, to turn them into places where people can gather? Can we tackle social issues by changing the town little by little, starting with familiar places and buildings, while having fun? Based on this interest, we will learn about various cases and learn about "town development, town use, renovation, area renovation, town play" and "public design". Through these activities, students will learn that towns are filled with possibilities and materials, and will also learn methods of public design.

空き時間を埋めるためではなく，興味を持って履修する受講者を求める。写真や図表を多用し，初学者にもわかりやすくなるよう努めるが，授業態度には厳しくする。私語や睡眠は厳禁（平常点に反映される場合がある）。そのことを自覚したうえで履修すること。なお，授業の順番や内容を多少変更する可能性がある。一緒に充実した授業にしていきましょう！
まちにある様々な資源（廃校・空き家・店舗・公園・商店街・ストリート…）や，まち全体，まちの余白(space）を使って，まちをリデザインすることの意味や事例を学ぶ。「文系（コミュニティ学系）」だからこそできるデザインの手法や理論，事例を学ぶ。

「まち」がテキスト（書物）であると考えてみよう。書物の1文1文に意味があるように，まちにある「もの・こと」には何らかの「意味」がある。例えば，なぜコンビニの外に面している棚には本が置いてある？ 高層マンションの隣には空地のようなスペースがある？ まちに対する「知」を深め，あらゆる資源（もの・こと・ひと・ばしょ）を使って，まちという書物をリデザインする方法を検討する。
より具体的に説明しよう。まちにある様々な資源，ときに負の資源とされるもの（廃校・空き家・空き店舗・あまり使われない公園）や，普段通る道路や水辺，さらには「まち全体」や，「まちの余白・隙間」を使ったり，リノベーションをして，そこを人々が集う場所に変えることはできないのか。身近な場所や建物から少しずつ，楽しみながらまちを変えていくことで，社会問題に挑むことはできないのか。このような関心から様々な事例を知り，「まちづくり・まちづかい・リノベーション・エリアリノベーション・まちあそび」や「パブリックデザイン」について学ぶ。以上を通じて，まちが可能性と素材であふれていることを知り，パブリックデザインの手法を学ぶ。
