This course aims to explore approaches to community-based urban development that seek to create cities which are aesthetically pleasing, enjoyable, and engaging, while also contributing to society and fostering connections among people.
Students will deepen their understanding of design methods, theories, and case studies that are uniquely developed from a humanities- and community-oriented perspective.
This course examines public space and community development by viewing the city as a text to be read and interpreted.
Just as every sentence in a book carries meaning, the elements that make up a city—objects, activities, people, and places—also embody particular intentions and meanings.
By focusing on familiar urban spaces and everyday scenes, students deepen their understanding of cities as sites of knowledge.
More specifically, the course pays attention to urban resources that are often regarded as negative or underutilized, such as closed schools, vacant houses, empty shops, and rarely used parks.
It also examines spatial resources such as roads, waterfronts, and the margins and gaps within cities.
Students consider how these spaces can be reactivated or renovated to become places where people gather.
In addition, the course explores small-scale and playful practices, such as creative uses of capsule toy machines or vending machines, to examine how cities can be changed in enjoyable ways while engaging with social issues.
Through these discussions, students come to understand that cities are filled with possibilities and materials.
By examining urban development, renovation, area-based renovation, and playful approaches to city-making, the course introduces practical methods and perspectives of public design.

空き時間を埋めるためではなく、興味を持って履修する受講者を求める。写真や図表を多用し、初学者にもわかりやすくなるよう努めるが、授業態度には厳しくする。私語や睡眠は厳禁（平常点に反映される場合がある）。そのことを自覚したうえで履修すること。なお、授業の順番や内容を多少変更する可能性がある。一緒に充実した授業にしていきましょう！
美しい・楽しい・面白いまちづくりを志向しつつ、社会貢献や人と人とのつながり形成が可能なまちづくりの方法を学ぶ。文系（コミュニティ学系）だからこそできるデザインの手法・理論・事例について理解を深める。

「まち」を一つのテキスト（書物）として読み解く視点から、公共空間とまちづくりを考えてみよう。
書物の一文一文に意味があるように、まちに存在する「もの・こと・ひと・ばしょ」には、何らかの意味や意図が込められている。このような視点から、身近な都市空間や日常の風景に着目し、まちに対する「知」を深めていく。
具体的には、廃校や空き家、空き店舗、あまり利用されていない公園など、しばしば負の資源と捉えられるものや、道路・水辺・まちの余白や隙間といった空間資源に注目する。
それらをどのように活用・リノベーションすることで、人々が集う場へと転換できるのか。
また、ガチャガチャや自動販売機など身近なモノの工夫といった小さな実践から、楽しみながらまちを変え、社会的課題に向き合う可能性についても考察する。
以上を通じて、まちが可能性と素材に満ちた存在であることを理解し、「まちづくり、リノベーション、エリアリノベーション、まちあそび」といった実践的視点から、公共デザインの手法を学ぶ。
