Learn about the variations in public philosophy and consider patterns of human connections. Learn the history of public affairs in postwar Japan. Learn how to think philosophically and fundamentally about coexistence with others.
A new subject called "public" has been added to high school social studies classes. The public, which is different from the private sphere (family, friendships, etc.), is drawing attention. However, until now, the public has been thought of as something related to politics or the state or local government. Of course, the public also relates to more familiar issues. For example, it relates to familiar things such as "etiquette when waiting for the school bus at Niiza or Shiki Station." It is because the bus is "for all students," not "my bus," that it becomes a public issue. Based on this interest, we will consider the current state of the public, the philosophy of the public, and the history of the public. By learning the forms, patterns, and history of "knowledge" related to the public, we will consider coexistence with others.

2023年度以降入学のコミュニティ政策学科の学生については，「公共空間論」（担当：権）と「シェアライフ論」（担当：権）のどちらか，もしくは双方を履修していることが望ましい。とくに「公共空間論」は，すでに履修しているか，そうでない場合は原則として「公共哲学」と同時に履修すること。なお，他学科・他学部の学生や，コミュニティ政策学科の4年生以上の学生については，上記の特記事項には該当しない。
空き時間を埋めるためではなく，興味を持って履修する受講者を求める。写真や図などを多用して初学者にもわかりやすい講義となるよう努めるが，授業態度には厳しくする。私語や睡眠などは厳禁の授業なので（平常点に反映される場合がある），その点を自覚（理解と賛同）したうえで履修すること。なお，内容と順番は多少変更する可能性がある。
公共哲学のバリエーションを知り，人と人のつながり方のパターンを考える。戦後日本における公共の歴史を知る。他者との共存について，哲学的・原理的に考える方法を学ぶ。

高等学校の社会科で「公共」という科目ができた。私的領域（家族・友人関係等）とは相違する公共が注目されているのだ。ただし，これまで公共と言うと，政治の領域や国や自治体が関わるものであると考えられてきた。それはもちろんだが，公共はもっと身近な問題にも関係する。例えば「新座・志木駅で学バスを待つときのマナー」といった身近なことにも関わる。「マイバス」ではなく、「学生みんなのバス」だからこそ、公共的な問題となるのだ。このような関心から，公共の現状，公共哲学，公共の歴史について検討する。公共に関する「知」の形式やパターンや歴史を学ぶことを通じて，他者との共存を考えていく。
