【Course Objectives】

The goals of this course are to
(1) Deepen interest in and understanding of various social movements in modern society.
(2) Understand the main theories and methods of social movement studies, and become able to sociologically consider social movements that interest them.

【Course Contents】

In recent years, social movements such as anti-nuclear movement and anti-security legislation movement in Japan, and the #MeToo movement and the Black Lives Matter movement in the world have been attracting attention again as the actors that change society. In addition, lobbying (advocacy) by NPOs has come to influence policies on themes such as anti-poverty, LGBT, and suicide countermeasures. In order to analyze these social movements, theories and methods of social movement research, centered on sociology, have been accumulated.
In this class, we will first provide an overview and overall picture of social movements in the first and second sessions, and then learn the main theories and methods of sociological social movement research in sessions 3 to 7. Furthermore, in Parts 8 and 9, we will introduce social movement research in adjacent areas. In the 10th to 13th sessions, we will introduce the research of the instructor and guest speaker in detail to help you understand the breadth of social movement research.
Through these activities, we aim to develop the skills necessary to analyze modern society from the perspective of "changing society."
