The student should be able to consider what discrimination is, why it occurs and what the problems are, not only in terms of examples, but also in terms of history and the structures in which it occurs. The student also should be able to use appropriately key concepts and perspectives in understanding discrimination, such as prejudice, majority/minority, ethnicity, gender and disability.
Every person may have been somewhat a perpetrator or victim of discrimination at some point in their lives, and humanity has worked towards its elimination in various ways. Thus, it is important to learn about discrimination in the sense of learning about our own problems and those of our world. On the other hand, when we try to discuss discrimination seriously, we may ask, "What is discrimination?" or "What exactly is discrimination?" and 'Who/what determines whether discrimination is based on discrimination or not?' and "What are the causes of discrimination and how is it dealt with?" It is also true that there are constant debates in on such basic issues as 'What are the causes of discrimination and how to deal with it? Learning about discrimination is difficult in the sense that there is such a complex intermingling of different positions.
This course will give a perspective on the study of such discrimination, taking into account the findings of sociology, psychology and economics, as well as the history of modern society. First, students will learn about basic concepts and history as a prerequisite for thinking about discrimination, and then learn about the history and current situation of discrimination and the causes and approaches to various types of discrimination by topic, such as gender, ethnicity and disability.

差別とは何か，なぜ起こるのか，何が問題であるのかについて，事例のみならず，歴史やそれが起こる構造といった観点をふまえて考えることができるようになること．偏見，マジョリティ／マイノリティ，エスニシティ，ジェンダー，障害といった差別を理解する上で重要な概念や視点を適切に使いこなせるようになること．

いろいろな意味で、差別と人は無縁ではありえない。人生のどこかの場面で、なんらかの差別を見聞したり経験したり加担したことがない人はいないはずだし、人類はさまざまな仕方でその撤廃に向けた取り組みを進めてきた。このように自分たちと自分たちの世界にとって避けがたい問題を学ぶという意味で、差別について学ぶことは重要である。他方、差別を真剣に議論しようとするとき、「差別って具体的にどんなことなの？」とか「だれが／何を基準に差別かどうかが決まるの？」とか「差別の原因と対処法は何なの？」といった基礎的な問題についての論争が多方面で絶えないのも事実である。このようにさまざまな立場が複雑に交錯しているという意味で、差別について学ぶことは大変である。
この授業では、社会学・心理学・政治学などの知見や昨今の社会情勢を踏まえつつ、こうした差別についての学びに基礎的な見通しを与える。差別について考えるうえでの前提として基礎概念と歴史について学んだうえで、ジェンダー、エスニシティ、障害といったトピック別に差別をめぐる歴史や現状、そして各種の差別の経過や原因や取り組みを学ぶ。
