The objective is to understand contemporary discriminations by studying the history of discrimination in modern Japan.
Today, movements rooted in ethnocentrism and xenophobia are rising globally. In response to this situation, we are inevitably compelled to ask, “What is discrimination?” In this course, we will study discrimination in modern Japan as essential knowledge for those of us living in Japan. The history of modern Japan's ‘development’ is simultaneously a history of discrimination about "Who is/isn't Japanese?” In other words, discriminatory attitudes toward Koreans, Taiwanese, and the Ainu were formed within the history of modern Japan. Acquiring this historical knowledge is necessary when attempting to overcome present-day discrimination. The course will emphasize three aspects: ① the differences between pre-modern and modern discrimination, ② the formation of discrimination through modern Japan's colonial rule, and ③ movements and thoughts aimed at overcoming discrimination. In doing so, we will also try to examine the validity of theoretical analytical tools concerning discrimination today.

人間は差別を克服するよう努力すべきだとの姿勢をもつこと（差別を肯定しないこと）を履修の条件とする。
近代日本における差別の歴史を学ぶことにより、現在の差別について深く考察できるようにすることを目標とする。
The objective is to understand contemporary discriminations by studying the history of discrimination in modern Japan.
今日、自国民中心主義と排外主義の動きが世界的に高まっている。そうした状況について考えるとき、私たちは必然的に「差別とはなにか」という問いをもつことを要求される。この授業では、日本という地で生活する私たちにとって知っておくべき知識として、近代日本における差別について学ぶ。近代日本の「発展」の歴史は、同時に「日本人」のあり方をめぐる差別の歴史でもある。いいかえれば、朝鮮・台湾・アイヌに対する差別意識は近代日本の歴史のなかで形成されてきたのである。現在の差別を克服しようとするとき、そうした歴史的知識を獲得することが必要である。授業では、①前近代と近代の差別の相違点、②近代日本の植民地支配と差別の形成、③差別克服のための運動・思想という側面を重視する。そのさい、今日の差別に関する理論的分析ツールの妥当性についても適宜検討したい。
