This class has three objectives: (1) grasp the characteristics of contemporary environmental issues; (2) understanding the historical background of environmental issues; (3) be able to explain the need for the perspective of environmental sociology.
There are two categories in this class. The first half of this class is to learn perspectives and methods of environmental sociology. In the second half is to understand local environmental issues from case studies. And through that process, we will consider the relationship between “society" and “environment" in the future.

講義の内容への理解を深めるため、テーマごとに文献を読み込むなど、2時間程度の予習・復習をしてください。また、日々の社会問題や環境問題に接するため、新聞などのメディアを通じた情報収集も随時行ってください。可能であれば、関心のある「環境問題」の現場を訪問することをおすすめしますが、その際は事前に相談してください。

この授業の目標は以下の3つです。
①現代における環境問題の特徴を環境社会学の視点から捉えられるようになる。
②現代社会をとりまく「環境問題」が生まれた歴史的な背景を理解する。
③なぜ環境社会学的な視点が必要なのか、地域の多様性を踏まえながら、現代社会のさまざまな「環境問題」にひきつけて論じられるようになる。

現代の環境問題の特徴と複雑さについて、環境社会学の理論や実践を通して学びます。そこから現代の環境問題の特徴を理解し、社会と環境のよりよい姿について考える視点を身につけます。
前半パート（第1～4回）では、環境社会学の視点や手法がどのようなものかを学びます。中間～後半パート（第5～14回）では、「身近な自然」「歴史的環境」「人と自然との関係性」「地域づくり」「モノの社会史」などに関する具体的な事例にもとづいて地域環境に関する考察を深め、これからの「社会」と「環境」とのあるべき姿を考えます。
