By the end of this course, students will be able to:
1.Understand the historical transformations of education for youth.
2.Develop their own perspectives on the contemporary issues facing education for youth.
3.Form their own reflections through watching films and listening to guest speakers, and communicate those reflections to others.
4.Listen carefully to others, understand their viewpoints, express their own ideas in response, and engage in dialogue.
The theme of this course is “the difficulty of becoming an adult.”
Youth, understood as the transitional period from childhood to adulthood, has long been regarded as a difficult stage of life in every historical era. For this reason, various social arrangements have been developed to support this transition.
In this course, we will first survey the historical transformations of these arrangements—that is, the changing forms of education for youth—and then consider the issues they face in contemporary society.
The course will be conducted primarily through lectures by the instructor. At the same time, however, as many materials as possible will be distributed, and the lectures will proceed through close reading and interpretation of these texts. At the end of each class, students will be asked to write a brief reaction paper. In addition, we will also engage in activities such as watching films and listening to guest speakers, followed by sharing and discussing our reflections.
For those of you who are currently living through the period of youth, thinking about education for youth will also lead to reflecting on yourselves and on the ways in which you live your own lives. The instructor believes that this is a highly important intellectual undertaking.

この授業のテーマは「おとなになることのむずかしさ」です。子ども期からおとな期への移行過程としての若者期は、いつの時代にあっても困難な時期と捉えられてきましたし、それゆえその移行を支援する様々な社会的な仕掛けが用意されてきました。
この授業ではその仕掛け＝若者教育の歴史的変容を概観したうえで、その今日的な課題を考えていく予定です。
授業は、講師による講義が中心となります。ただ、できるだけ多くの資料を配付し、それを実際に読み解きながら講義を進めていきたいと思います。講義の最後には毎回リアクションペーパーを書いていただきます。さらに映画を観たり、ゲストスピーカーの話を伺ったうえで、感想を語り合う、といった取り組みもやっていきましょう。若者期を生きるみなさんにとって、若者期の教育を考えるとは自分自身とその生き方を考える、という問題にもつながっていくことでしょう。それはとても大事な知的作業であると講師は考えています。
