To understand how prominent social thinkers throughout history have analyzed politics and institutions in their respective eras, and to learn methods for critically analyzing contemporary society.
Social thought has continuously sought to address the challenges and concerns of its time. Discussions span from conceptual and ideological examinations, such as those of the state, enlightenment, politics, equality, and rights, to practical and real-world issues like poverty, gender, globalization, bioethics, the environment, education, and science and technology. This class aims to provide you with basic knowledges of philosophical thought on “society” from ancient times to the present, enabling you to critically examine social and public issues in contemporary society. In addition to lectures on the history of social thought, this class will include individual work and group discussions. Active participation is required, so please enroll with an understanding of the importance of engaging proactively in class activities.

歴史上の著名な社会思想家が各時代における政治や諸制度に対してどのような分析を行ってきたかを理解し，現代社会を批判的に分析する方法を学ぶ。
To understand how prominent social thinkers throughout history have analyzed politics and institutions in their respective eras, and to learn methods for critically analyzing contemporary society.
社会思想はその時々の社会における課題や問題関心に応えようとしてきた。ここでは、国家、啓蒙、政治、平等、権利……といった概念的・理念的なものの検討から、貧困、ジェンダー、グローバル、生命・医療倫理、環境、教育、科学技術……といった実践的・現実的な問題の検討にわたって議論が展開されている。本授業では古代から現代までの「社会」をめぐる哲学思想の基本的な知識を身につけ、現在の社会における社会的・公共的問題を考察できるようになることを目指す。なお、授業では、講義による社会思想史のレクチャーだけでなく、受講者の個人ワークやグループディスカッションを行う。そのため積極的な参加を必要とすることを理解の上、履修いただきたい。
