【Course Objectives】

This course is an elective capstone course in the Department of Community Development. Under the supervision of faculty members, students identify and explore their own research interests, and compile the outcomes of their research and practical work into either a Seminar Paper or a Graduation Thesis.
Fifteen years have passed since the Great East Japan Earthquake, but the reconstruction of the affected areas and the lives of the victims are still in progress. On the other hand, since then, disasters such as the Noto Peninsula earthquake have occurred frequently in various places, and the risk of a capital earthquake and a Nankai Trough earthquake has been pointed out, while abnormal weather due to global warming is becoming more severe. We can no longer separate "pre-disaster" and "post-disaster", and we must start from the recognition that we are living in an era of "between disasters". Disasters make the vulnerability of local communities clear and bring about various crises, but at the same time, they also demonstrate resilience in local communities and call for emergent efforts by NPOs and volunteers. What can we do to calmly accept reality and speak of hope, without falling into indifference or despair in the face of disaster risks? Based on the above awareness of the issues, this seminar aims to clarify the various aspects of communities in the "between disasters" while taking into account the community sociology perspective and expanding on what was learned in "Community Studies Seminar 1AB."
Specific goals are for students to engage in research and practice on the seminar theme of "Community Studies in the Between-Disaster Period," and to write a graduation thesis (seminar thesis) based on a research theme of their own choosing. The graduation thesis theme may be an extension of the seminar theme or a completely different topic. Students aiming to conduct empirical sociological research will be able to address as wide a range of themes as possible, regardless of field or research method (qualitative or quantitative).

【Course Contents】

In "Advanced Seminar on Community Studies 2A," students will review how to write their graduation thesis (seminar thesis) and then set their own research theme. They will then create a research plan, examine previous research, gather information, and prepare various surveys (interviews, fieldwork, questionnaire surveys, document analysis, etc.). In parallel with these activities, students will also undertake practical projects related to the seminar theme and present their group results both on and off campus.
As a general rule, research and practice related to the seminar theme and thesis guidance for the graduation thesis will alternate every other week. Graduation thesis guidance will involve progress reports and comments in a seminar format, as well as individual instruction.
