This course is an elective capstone course in the Department of Community Development. Under the supervision of faculty members, students identify and explore their own research interests, and compile the outcomes of their research and practical work into either a Seminar Paper or a Graduation Thesis.
In this class, we will explore what community development is really like in real life, from the viewpoint of public administration and local government. You will not only learn ideas from books, but also see how people actually work to improve their towns and neighborhoods.
Each student will choose a topic that matches their own interests. We mainly focus on the following areas, but we can also discuss and decide a different theme together.
1. Regeneration in rural areas with a declining population
2. Community development led by NPOs and social enterprises
3. Local government policies / partnership between citizens and local government
4. Community activities, companies’ social contribution (CSR), and local self-governance
First, we will review earlier studies and collect necessary information to learn how to research public administration and local government. Then, each student will set their own research topic. After that, students will do both literature research (reading books and articles) and field research—for example, walking around the area, observing the community, joining local activities, and listening to people who are involved in community development.
To gain insights from the real world, students are strongly encouraged to have their own on-site experiences. In the seminar, we will mainly do: reading and discussing academic texts, discussions among students, interviews, and on-site experience activities. When needed, the instructor will also provide individual guidance through one-on-one meetings.

調査を行う上でPCは必須である。複数の文書やプレゼン資料・動画を立ち上げて作業するので、ある程度の性能のものが望ましい。
コミュニティ政策学科での学修の集大成となる選択科目である。各教員の指導の下、各自の問題関心を探究し，その研究・実践の成果を取りまとめ、「演習論文」または「卒業論文」を作成する。

行政学・地方自治の分野からまちづくりの実態に触れ、各々の問題関心に沿って考察する。その際、主に次のような領域を想定している。ただし、具体的なテーマの設定については個別に相談に応じる。
（１）過疎地域の地域再生
（２）NPO・社会的企業のまちづくり
（３）自治体政策／市民と行政の協働
（４）コミュニティ活動・企業の社会貢献活動・地域自治
先行研究のレビューや必要な情報収集を行い行政学・地方自治研究のアプローチを学ぶ。その上で、各自の研究テーマを設定し、それに沿って文献調査やフィールド調査を行う。特に、現場から気づきを得るために、自主的に現場体験する機会を持つことを推奨する。演習では文献輪読、ゼミ生同士の議論、インタビュー、現地体験活動を中心に行う。適宜、個別面談で研究指導を行う。
