Poetry often becomes extensive in length. Herman Melville’s Clarel, for example, spans approximately 18,000 lines (and Ezra Pound’s The Cantos or Charles Olson’s The Maximus Poems are also extremely long when taken as a whole), making them difficult to approach lightly. It is certain, however, that all of these works hold an important place in the history of American literature. Furthermore, the existence of such long poems demonstrates the fact that long poetic works, akin to novels, have often been written and read throughout history.
In this course, we will focus on reading relatively long “medium-length” poems—works that, in recent years, have seldom been subjected to close reading in class. During the spring semester, we will tackle T. S. Eliot’s “The Waste Land” (1922), a representative work of Modernism. By carefully uncovering the myths, legends, and literary works upon which the text is based, critically reading the piece, and shedding light on its poetic ingenuity, the course aims to cultivate the abilities to “analyze and synthesize content” and to “conduct accurate and objective research” as outlined in the Curriculum Map. At the same time, students will be able to savor the charm of the poem.
“The Waste Land” contains numerous quotations and allusions, many of which are presented in foreign languages. In this course, students are required to use existing high-quality annotations to reexamine the depth of these references on their own. Fully understanding everything, however, is nearly impossible. Rather, it is the chaos and despair created by these fragmentary collages that readers should embrace and appreciate.
This seminar will proceed with designated presenters giving presentations based on their prepared handouts. However, participants who are not presenting must also actively engage in appreciating and analyzing the works on their own initiative.
Although T. S. Eliot, born in St. Louis, Missouri, spent much of his life in England and even became a naturalized British citizen in 1927, this course will focus on his work as that of an American poet.

詩はしばしば長編になります。たとえばHerman MelvilleのClarelは約18,000行に及び(Ezra PoundのThe CantosやCharles OlsonのThe Maximus Poemsも各篇を総計すれば極めて長い)、軽々に近よることはできません。しかしながらいずれもアメリカ文学史上、重要な位置を占めていることは確かです。さらにこのような長編詩の存在は、小説のように長い詩がこれまでしばしば作られ、そして読まれてきたという事実を示していることも忘れてはなりません。
そこで本授業では、近年精読されることが少ない、比較的長い、いわば「中編」詩を読んでみたい。春学期は、モダニズムを代表するともいえるT. S. Eliotの“The Waste Land” (1922)にチャレンジします。テクストが踏まえる神話や伝説、文学作品を地道に掘り起こしながら、作品をクリティカルに読み、その詩的工夫に光を当てることによって、カリキュラム・マップに示された「内容を分析総合する能力」と、「的確で客観的な調査を行う技能」を養うとともに、作品の魅力を翫味することができるようになります。

“The Waste Land”には数多くの引用やアリュージョンが含められています。しかも外国語で表記されている場合も少なくありません。本授業では既存の優れた注釈を使って、それらの奥行きをみずから再確認することが求められます。ただし、すべてを明確に理解することは困難です。むしろ、それらの断片的コラージュが作り出す混沌や絶望こそ読者は味わうべきでしょう。
本演習は、あらかじめ定められた担当者がハンドアウトに基づいて発表することによって進められます。担当でない参加者もみずからすすんで翫味しなければなりません。
なお米国セントルイス生まれのEliotは、長らく英国を拠点とし、1927年には英国へ帰化さえしていますが、本科目ではアメリカ詩人としてその作品を取りあげることとします。
