Poetry often becomes extensive in length. Herman Melville’s Clarel, for example, spans approximately 18,000 lines (and Ezra Pound’s The Cantos or Charles Olson’s The Maximus Poems are also extremely long when taken as a whole), making them difficult to approach lightly. It is certain, however, that all of these works hold an important place in the history of American literature. Furthermore, the existence of such long poems demonstrates the fact that long poetic works, akin to novels, have often been written and read throughout history.
In this course, following the spring semester, we will continue to read relatively long “medium-length” poems that seem to have recently received little close reading in class. During the fall semester, we will explore works that take us back in time, including John Greenleaf Whittier’s “Snow-Bound”, and Edgar Allan Poe’s “medium-length” poem “The Raven,” either of which can be seen as a representative work of American Romanticism. By critically reading these works and shedding light on their poetic techniques, while also exploring the sense of nostalgia and imagination characteristic of Romanticism, the course aims to cultivate the abilities to “analyze and synthesize content” and to “conduct accurate and objective research” as outlined in the Curriculum Map. At the same time, students will be able to savor the charm of these poems.
When closely reading Whittier’s“Snow-Bound”, we will also read and consider commentary by Robert Penn Warren, a prominent 20th-century Southern critic, writer, and poet. For Poe’s “The Raven,” we will of course refer to his own essay, “The Philosophy of Composition,” in which he explains the background of the poem’s creation and discusses “a distinct limit, as regards length.”
This seminar will proceed with designated presenters giving presentations based on their prepared handouts. However, participants who are not presenting must also actively engage in appreciating and analyzing the works on their own initiative.

詩はしばしば長編になります。たとえばHerman MelvilleのClarelは約18,000行に及び(Ezra PoundのThe CantosやCharles OlsonのThe Maximus Poemsも各篇を総計すれば極めて長い)、軽々に近よることはできません。しかしながらいずれもアメリカ文学史上、重要な位置を占めていることは確かです。さらにこのような長編詩の存在は、小説のように長い詩がこれまでしばしば作られ、そして読まれてきたという事実を示していることも忘れてはなりません。
そこで本授業では春学期に続き、近年精読されることが少ないと思われる、比較的長い、いわば「中編」詩を読んでみたい。秋学期は時代を遡り、Whitmanの「中編」詩“Song of Myself”等とともにアメリカ・ロマン主義を代表するともいえるJohn Greenleaf Whittierの“Snow-Bound”およびEdgar Allan Poeの“The Raven”を精読します。ロマン主義らしい郷愁や空想の感触を確認しながら、作品をクリティカルに読み、その詩的工夫に光を当てることによって、カリキュラム・マップに示された「内容を分析総合する能力」と、「的確で客観的な調査を行う技能」を養うとともに、作品の魅力を翫味することができるようになります。

Whittierの“Snow-Bound”を精読するに当たっては20世紀南部を代表する批評家・作家・詩人のRobert Penn Warrenによる評論を併読し、Poeの“The Raven”を読む際は、みずから“The Raven”作詩の背景を説明し、詩の「長さに関する明確な制限」も論じた自身の評論“The Philosophy of Composition”をもちろん参照します。
