【授業の目標 / Course Objectives】

しばしば「20世紀のジェイン・オースティン」と呼ばれるバーバラ・ピム (1913-80) のJane and Prudence (1953) およびA Glass of Blessings (1958) を精読することによって、ピムの作品はオースティンの現代版イミテーション以上の何かであるのか、類似のテーマの文学的な変奏は独自の価値を持ちうるのか、といった事柄について考察を深めます。

Barbara Pym (1913-80) is often referred to as “a Jane Austen of the 20th century”. By closely reading two of her novels, namely Jane and Prudence (1953) and A Glass of Blessings (1958), we will reconsider whether Pym's novels are anything more than 20th century imitations of Jane Austen, and whether literary variations on similar themes can have merits of their own.

【授業の内容 / Course Contents】

バーバラ・ピムの小説の多くは、田舎町を舞台に、少数の人物グループの人間関係をユーモアをもって分析するという点において、確かにジェイン・オースティンを思わせます。なかんずく、マッチメイキング行為をプロット上の重要な仕掛けとしているJane and Prudence、人生の恵みをすべて手にしているかに見える女性をヒロインとしたA Glass of Blessingsは、オースティンのEmmaとの比較を読者に誘っているように見えます。本授業では、ピムの作品を媒介に、インターテクスチュアリティ、そしてオリジナリティという文学批評上の重要な概念について考えてみようと思っています。

毎回、発表者を決めて報告してもらい、それを出発点としてディスカッションに入ってゆきます。発表者のみならず、全参加者の積極的な発言を期待します。

Many of Barbara Pym's novels certainly remind us of Jane Austen in that they are set in provincial towns of the UK and that they make a point of analysing, with humour, the human relationship within a small group of characters. Above all, Jane and Prudence and A Glass of Blessings seem to be consciously inviting the reader to compare them with Austen's Emma: The former has the act of matchmaking as an important contrivance of the plot, and the latter's heroine has all the blessings of life, as Emma Woodhouse did. In this class, we will reconsider two important ideas in literary criticism――intertextuality and originality――by way of Pym's novelistic efforts.

In each class, we will appoint presenters and use their report as the starting point for the discussion. It is expected that not only the presenters, but all participants will proactively speak up in class.
