【Course Objectives】

By closely reading Charles Dickens's Bleak House, the class will try to analyse how Dickens tried to connect the problem of inheritance with the Victorian sense of social stagnation and to what extent Dickens's trade-mark humanism was effective in the plot and solution of the novel.

【Course Contents】

The problem of inheritance occupies a pivotal place in the continuation of any form of society. What is meant there is not only monetary/ economic take-over, but political take-over (the inheritance of social systems) and cultural take-over (the inheritance of national/ familial/ personal self-definitions). In the British novel, which developed along with the growth of civil society, its importance implicitly penetrates every corner of the genre. In the spring semester, we take up Charles Dickens's Bleak House and consider how the network of inheritance is meticulously constructed by the author as something that powerfully constricts the social and personal lives of the individuals.

In each class, we will appoint presenters and use their report as the starting point for the discussion. It is expected that not only the presenters, but all participants will proactively speak up in class.
