【授業の目標 / Course Objectives】

しばしばジェイン・オースティンと比較されるアングロ・アイリッシュの作家マライア・エッジワース (1768-1849) のThe Absentee (1812) を精読することによって、類似の社会的問題を扱う際にオースティンとエッジワースの態度にどのような差異があったのか、二人の文学的空間はどのくらい重なり合い、どのくらい影響しあっているのかを探ります。

The Anglo-Irish novelist Maria Edgeworth (1768-1849) is often compared with Jane Austen. By closely reading Edgeworth’s The Absentee (1812), we will consider how their attitudes differed in dealing with similar social topics, how much of their literary spaces are in common, and how much they influenced each other.

【授業の内容 / Course Contents】

マライア・エッジワースの『不在地主』(1812) は、社交のために財産を浪費する両親を持った主人公が一家の土地が農業に貸し出されているアイルランドに赴き、ダブリン社交界におけるマッチメイキングの罠にはまりかけたあと、農地の状態の改善にとりかかるというプロットを持っています。マッチメイキング、および農地の立て直しというテーマはオースティンの『エマ』を強く想起させますが、エッジワースとオースティンの語り口は類似性を帯びつつも明らかに異なっています。その類似と差異がどこに存するのか、二人を文学史的コンテクストの中に置き直すことによって考えてみましょう。

毎回、発表者を決めて報告してもらい、それを出発点としてディスカッションに入ってゆきます。発表者のみならず、全参加者の積極的な発言を期待します。

In Maria Edgeworth's The Absentee, the hero, whose parents have wasted a lot of money on socialising, visits Ireland, where their family estates are rented to farmers. After nearly being ensnared by the matchmaking plots of the Dublin social world, he sets about improving the situations of the family's estates. The themes of matchmaking and agricultural reform strongly remind us of Jane Austen's Emma, but the narrative attitudes of Edgeworth and Austen distinctly differ, although much similarity can also be detected. By repositioning Edgeworth and Austen in the context of literary history, we will consider where their similarity and difference lie.

In each class, we will appoint presenters and use their report as the starting point for the discussion. It is expected that not only the presenters, but all participants will proactively speak up in class.
