The realism novelist Arnold Bennett (1867-1931) was one of the most popular 'serious' authors of the Edwardian era. By closely reading his novel The Old Wives' Tale (1908), we will consider how Bennett represented the passage of time and the changing of times, and their relationship to individual human beings―and compare Bennet's literary attitude with that of Virginia Woolf, whom we read in the spring semester.
In her famous essay 'Mr Bennett and Mrs Brown' (1924), Virginia Woolf criticised Arnold Bennett for being a "materialist"―which means a writer of fiction who makes light of the subtle workings of human hearts and believes that people can be 'realistically' depicted from the viewpoint of the material conditions of their lives. Woolf's essay was a declaration of war against the realism fiction of the earlier age, which she believed was incapable of grasping the whole existence of human beings. This class will reconsider whether all Bennett's 'realist' novel, which deals with a subject matter not totally unlike that of Woolf's The Years, really deserved such sweeping criticism.
In each class, we will appoint presenters and use their report as the starting point for the discussion. It is expected that not only the presenters, but all participants will proactively speak up in class.

エドワード朝の人々に最もよく読まれた「シリアスな」書き手のひとりであるリアリズム小説家アーノルド・ベネット (1867-1931) のThe Old Wives' Tale (1908) を精読することによって、ベネットが時間の流れと時代の変化、そしてそれらと個人の生と関りをどのように表象したかを探ります―そして、春学期に読むヴァージニア・ウルフとの創作態度の違いについて考えます。

1924年の有名なエッセイ'Mr Bennett and Mrs Brown'において、ヴァージニア・ウルフはアーノルド・ベネットを「物質主義者」―人の心の微妙な動きを軽視し、物質的な生活条件を通して人間は「リアリスティックに」描くことができるものだと信じている作家―だと非難しました。ウルフのエッセイは、人間の全存在を捉えられていないと彼女が考える前時代のリアリズム小説に対する宣戦布告であったわけです。この授業では、ウルフのThe Yearsと似ていなくもない題材を扱うベネットのリアリズム小説が、本当にそのように切って捨てられるに値したのかどうかを再検討することになるでしょう。
毎回、発表者を決めて報告してもらい、それを出発点としてディスカッションに入ってゆきます。発表者のみならず、全参加者の積極的な発言を期待します。
