This course aims to read some of the most famous lyric poems by an English Romantic poet William Wordsworth, chosen from the two versions of Lyrical Ballads (1798 and 1800) and Poems, in Two Volumes (1807), including some political poems written in the first person, consider their characteristics, and, in the process, cast a glance at Wordsworth's socially radical thinking and its transition over time. At the same time, through consultation with various modern literary criticism, we will learn how to interpret literary works and construct our own view on them as well.
We will peruse some of Wordsworth's most important lyric poems, that is, three shorter poems and a longer one‘Tintern Abbey' from LB (1798), the so-called Lucy Poems from LB (1800) and eight sonnets written around 1802 and yet another longer poem‘Ode: Intimations of Immortality' from Poems (1807) with four others, and deepen our comprehension of the text by occasionally referring to modern literary criticism on these poems as well. In each class we will read about 50-100 lines of poetry according to the lesson plan shown below. This plan could be slightly revised depending on students’wishes. Details will be provided in the course syllabus given on the first day of class.

At the same time, through consultation with various modern literary criticism, we will learn how to interpret literary works and construct our own view on them as well.
