【Course Objectives】

This course aims to read some of the very best passages chosen from an English Romantic poet William Wordsworth's autobiographical epic The Prelude (1805) and consider the problems of self and self-expression in Romantic literature. At the same time, through consultation with various modern literary criticism, we will learn how to interpret literary works and construct our own view on them as well.

【Course Contents】

We will peruse some chosen passages from the long autobiographical epic, depicting from the poet's childhood in the Lake District, through his Cambridge days and his hopes for the French Revolution to be followed by utter disillusionment, to the final recovery from despair by the power of imagination and deepen our comprehension of the text by referring to modern literary criticism as well. In each class we will read about 100 lines of poetry according to the lesson plan shown below. This plan could be slightly revised depending on students' wishes. Details will be provided in the course syllabus given on the first day of class.
