【Course Objectives】

This course aims to read some of the most famous longer narrative poems (150-500 lines) by an English Romantic poet William Wordsworth, chosen from the two versions of Lyrical Ballads (1798 and 1800) and Poems, in Two Volumes (1807), consider the meanings of miserable lives, into which almost all protagonists irrespective of their sex socially sank in his narratives around this time, and, in the process, cast a glance at Wordsworth's radical political attitude and its change over time. At the same time, through consultation with various modern literary criticism, we will learn how to interpret literary works and construct our own view on them as well.

【Course Contents】

We will peruse some of Wordsworth's most important narrative poems, that is, ‘The Female Vagrant' and ‘The Thorn' from LB (1798) both with a female protagonist, ‘The Old Cumberland Beggar' and ‘Michael' from LB (1800) and ‘Resolution and Independence' from Poems (1807), all three with a male protagonist, and deepen our comprehension of the text by occasionally referring to modern literary criticism on these poems as well. In each class we will read about 100-120 lines of poetry according to the lesson plan shown below. This plan could be slightly revised depending on students' wishes. Details will be provided in the course syllabus given on the first day of class.
