On completion of this course, students will develop advanced English language skills in reading and understanding early modern English correctly through a close reading of William Shakespeare's comedy, The Merry Wives of Windsor, acquire a wide knowledge of Renaissance English drama, and cultivate the ability to discuss the range of Shakespeare’s comedies from a critical perspective.
Shakespeare is generally considered to be good at romantic comedies and did not write satirical city comedies like Ben Jonson did. In fact, however, the range of Shakespeare’s comedy is wider than normally conceived. The Merry Wives of Windsor, although not set in London, has many elements in common with citizen comedies of the time, with its plot of citizens taking an active part in punishing the exaggerated sexual deviancy of Sir John Folstaff.
In this course, students will read the text of The Merry Wives of Windsor closely in a seminar style based on presentations by each student in turn and discussion by all students, in order to deepen our overall understanding of the play’s interrelated themes such as the presence of citizen class, satire, and desire and regulation, in Early Modern comedy.

受講生には、時間をかけて丁寧に本文と注釈の両方を読みこめる英語読解力と根気の両方があることが望ましい。
この授業では、ウィリアム・シェイクスピアの喜劇『ウィンザーの陽気な女房たち』を精読する。それにより、初期近代英語を正確に読解する高度な英語力を育み、ルネサンス期のイングランド演劇について該博な知識を身につけるとともに、初期近代における喜劇の射程について、批評的な視点から議論する力を涵養することが、この授業の目的である。

シェイクスピアは一般にロマンティック・コメディを得意とし、ベン・ジョンソンのような都市風刺喜劇は書かなかったとされる。だが実際はシェイクスピア喜劇の射程は広く、『ウィンザーの陽気な女房たち』は、ロンドンを舞台にこそしていないものの、市民たちが活躍して騎士フォルスタッフの誇張された性的逸脱性に懲らしめを行うプロットは、当時の市民喜劇に共通する要素を数多く持っている。
この授業では、受講者が交代で行う発表と受講者全員によるディスカッションを基盤にした演習形式で『ウィンザーの陽気な女房たち』を精読し、初期近代喜劇における市民の存在感、風刺性、欲望と規範、といった互いに関連し合うテーマについて総合的な理解を深める。
