In this course, students will read closely William Shakespeare’s tragedy, Titus Andronicus, in a seminar format. The objective of this course is to develop advanced English language skills in reading and understanding early modern English, to acquire a specialized knowledge of Renaissance English drama, and to enhance students’ ability to critically discuss the significance of revenge tragedy in the early modern period.
Titus Andronicus, written by William Shakespeare, is a Roman tragedy developed around a chain of revenge. After her son is sacrificed by the Roman general, Titus Andronicus, Tamora, Queen of the Goths, becomes the empress of Rome and carries out a series of cruel schemes against the house of Titus. In the final stage of the play, Titus retaliates by killing Tamora’s sons and serving their flesh to her. Through this escalation of excessive violence in the name of revenge, the play depicts the collapse of the binary opposition between Romans and Goths—that is, between civilization and barbarism.
In this course, students will read Titus Andronicus closely in a seminar format based on presentations by each student in turn and discussion by all students, in order to deepen their understanding of how violence in a form of revenge is represented in early modern drama, and how such representations destabilize the binary opposition between civilization and barbarism.

この授業では、ウィリアム・シェイクスピアの悲劇『タイタス・アンドロニカス』を精読する。それにより、初期近代英語を正確に読解する高度な英語力を養い、ルネサンス期のイングランド演劇について専門的な知識を身につけるとともに、復讐を扱った劇が初期近代においてどのような意味を持っていたのか、批評的な視点から議論する力を高めることが、この授業の目的である。
In this course, students will read closely William Shakespeare’s tragedy, Titus Andronicus, in a seminar format. シェイクスピアによる『タイタス・アンドロニカス』は、復讐が連鎖するローマ悲劇である。ローマの将軍タイタス・アンドロニカスによって息子を生贄にされたゴートの女王タモーラは、ローマ皇帝の后となり、残酷な策略をもってタイタス一族に復讐を仕掛る。最終的にタイタスはタモーラの息子たちを殺害し、その肉を母親に饗するという凄惨な行為でこれに返報する。このようにこの劇は、復讐という名の過剰な暴力の連鎖によって、ローマ人対ゴート人、つまり文明対野蛮という二項対立が崩壊する過程を描いている。
この授業では、受講者が交代で行う発表と受講者全員によるディスカッションを基盤にした演習形式で『タイタス・アンドロニカス』を精読し、初期近代演劇において、復讐という形をとった暴力がどのように表象され、それが文明と野蛮という二項対立をいかに揺るがすのかについて、理解を深めることを目指す。
