On completion of this course, students will develop advanced English language skills in reading and understanding Early Modern English correctly through a close reading of William Shakespeare's problem comedy, Measure for Measure, acquire a wide knowledge of Renaissance English drama, and cultivate the ability to discuss the range of Shakespeare’s comedies from a critical perspective.
It is one of the characteristics of Shakespeare’s plays that the voices of different characters are often in conflict with each other and never converge on a single, ideological message. Critics in the 20th century found that in some of his comedies such polyphonic aspect of his plays casts a shadow over the traditional happy ending of comedy and called them ‘problem plays’. In Measure for Measure, for example, various characters argue what is law or justice so arbitrarily that the reader should exercise their own judgement to interpret what the play really means.
In this course, students will read the text of Measure for Measure closely in a seminar style based on presentations by each student in turn and discussion by all students, in order to deepen our overall understanding of the play’s interrelated themes such as justice, ethics, marriage, and a disguised ruler, in Early Modern comedy.

受講生には、時間をかけて丁寧に本文と注釈の両方を読みこめる英語読解力と根気の両方があることが望ましい。
この授業では、ウィリアム・シェイクスピアの問題喜劇『尺には尺を』を精読する。それにより、初期近代英語を正確に読解する高度な英語力を育み、ルネサンス期のイングランド演劇について該博な知識を身につけるとともに、初期近代における喜劇の射程について、批評的な視点から議論する力を涵養することが、この授業の目的である。

異なる立場の声が互いに拮抗し、決して単一的なメッセージに収束しないのがシェイクスピア劇の特徴だが、そのような多声性が喜劇としてのハッピー・エンディングに影を投げかけているような作品群を20世紀の批評家たちは「問題劇」と呼んだ。例えば『尺には尺を』においては、正義や法の何たるかが多様な登場人物によって恣意的に論じられており、読み手はそれぞれが自らの判断力を行使して作品を読解する必要に迫られる。
この授業では、受講者が交代で行う発表と受講者全員によるディスカッションを基盤にした演習形式で『尺には尺を』を精読し、初期近代喜劇における正義、倫理、結婚、為政者の変装といった互いに関連し合うテーマについて総合的な理解を深める。
