In this course, students will read closely Thomas Kyd’s revenge tragedy, The Spanish Tragedy in a seminar format. The objective of this course is to develop advanced English language skills in reading and understanding early modern English, to acquire a specialized knowledge of Renaissance English drama, and to enhance students’ ability to critically discuss the representations of violence and order in early modern tragedies.
The Spanish Tragedy, written by Thomas Kyd, is a seminal work that initiated the vogue for revenge tragedy in the Renaissance. In this play, the personified Revenge appears on stage and urges retaliation for an unjust murder, while the revenger Hieronimo is torn between the public justice and his private desire for revenge. In this sense, the play confronts the question of whether violence enacted in the form of revenge can be justified within a society founded upon law and order.
In this course, students will read The Spanish Tragedy closely in a seminar format based on presentations by each student in turn and discussion by all students, in order to deepen their understanding of how violence in the form of revenge is represented in early modern drama, and how the brutality inherent in social order is visualized through such representations.

この授業では、トマス・キッドの悲劇『スペインの悲劇』を演習形式で精読する。それにより、初期近代英語を読解する高度な英語力を養い、ルネサンス期のイングランド演劇について専門的な知識を身につけるとともに、初期近代イングランドの悲劇における暴力と秩序の表象について、批評的な視点から議論する力を高めることが、この授業の目的である。
In this course, students will read closely Thomas Kyd’s revenge tragedy, The Spanish Tragedy in a seminar format. トマス・キッドによる『スペインの悲劇』は、ルネサンス期における復讐悲劇の流行の嚆矢となった作品である。この悲劇では、具現化した〈復讐〉が舞台上に登場し、不正な殺人に対する報復を促す一方で、復讐者ヒエロニモーは、公的な正義と私的な復讐心との狭間で葛藤する。つまりこの劇は、法と秩序を基盤とする社会において、復讐という形をとった暴力が正当化されうるのかという問いに向き合っているのである。
この授業では、受講者が交代で行う発表と受講者全員によるディスカッションを基盤にした演習形式で『スペインの悲劇』を精読し、初期近代演劇において、復讐という形をとった暴力がどのように表象され、社会秩序に内在する残虐性がいかに可視化されるのかについて、理解を深めることを目指す。
