In this course, we will closely read Virginia Woolf, A Writer's Diary (1953).
Virginia Woolf (1882-1941), one of the most important novelists and critics in the twentieth-century English literature, kept diaries throughout her career. Her enormous diaries are important for thinking about her life and work. In this course we are going to read A Writer's Diary (1953), excerpted and edited by her husband Leonard Woolf. We will particularly consider what writing was for Woolf by referring to her biographies and novels. At the beginning a lecture on her life and work will be given. So students who are unfamiliar with Woolf are welcome.

20世紀イギリスを代表する小説家、批評家Virginia Woolf (1882-1941)は膨大な日記も残しており、それは彼女の人生と文学を考える上で貴重な資料となっています。この授業では夫Leonard Woolfが日記から抜粋して編集したA Writer's Diary (1953)を精読します。伝記や作品に関する情報も参照しながら、Woolfにとって書くこととは何だったのかについて考察します。最初に彼女の生涯と作品について講義をしますので、彼女の作品を読んだことがなくても構いません。
