In this course, we will closely read Virginia Woolf's novel The Waves (1931).
Virginia Woolf (1882-1941) is one of the most important novelists and critics in twentieth-century England. In this course we are closely reading her major novel The Waves (1931). This novel is regarded as the culmination of Woolf’s modernist experiment; In the bold framework of soliloquies of six characters, Woolf reassesses her insights into nature and human life. In this course we will consider the relationship between nature and human beings from the viewpoint of contemporary ecology as well as examining important questions such as the empire, class, and gender. We will also read some essays on this novel.

20世紀イギリスを代表する小説家、批評家Virginia Woolf (1882-1941)の代表作The Waves (1931)を精読します。この作品はウルフのモダニズムの実験が頂点に達したもので、６人の人物による独白という大胆な形式の中に、人生や自然に関する洞察が総括的に取り込まれています。この授業ではとりわけ自然と人間の関係を現代のエコロジーの視点に注意しながら考察し、同時に帝国、階級、ジェンダー、人間の存在などの重要な問題も検討します。この作品に関する評論にも目配りする予定です。
