Learning how to critically interpret the postmodern fairy tale and write a coherent literary analysis.
As a writer, critic, and translator of tales and traditions from a variety of cultures and social contexts, Angela Carter’s literary project is as multifaceted as it is rich in evocative detail. This course will focus on the works in Carter’s most famous collection of stories, The Bloody Chamber (1979). Through a reading of these stories in comparison to Carter’s translations of Charles Perrault’s fairytales (Histoires ou Contes du Temps Passé avec des Moralités, 1697), this course will explore the language of Carter’s enchanted tales and critically engage with the ideas, characters, and politics of Carter’s postmodern folklore.
