Building on the foundational understanding of Pynchon’s early works, this course delves into his 2009 novel Inherent Vice, exploring its unique blend of noir, satire, and postmodern aesthetics. The course examines themes such as counterculture, historical erasure, and the interplay between memory and identity. Students will also draw connections between Inherent Vice and Pynchon’s earlier works.
By the end of this course, students should be able to:
- Critically analyze Inherent Vice within the framework of postmodern literature and noir traditions.
- Explore the historical and cultural contexts influencing Pynchon’s narrative.
- Draw thematic and stylistic connections between Inherent Vice and Pynchon’s earlier works.
- Develop advanced interpretive and analytical skills through essays and presentations.
