Students in this course will improve their reading comprehension skills through conducting an intensive reading of an American literary work and build their interpretation with a conscious understanding of the work's background, historical period, and literary contexts.
In this seminar, we will read Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Blithedale Romance (1852). Compared to contemporaries like Melville, Emerson, and Thoreau, Hawthorne remained distanced from social reform movements, including the abolitionist movement. Based on the facts of the construction and failure of the utopian community Brook Farm, in which Hawthorne was involved, this work is not only useful for understanding Hawthorne's perspective on social reform, but also offers insights into the intellectual climate of New England, including transcendentalism.
As this text allows for a multifaceted approach, each student should aim for their own unique interpretation, guided by their individual concerns. In addition to the work itself, we will also engage with representative critical readings, discussing practical issues such as what an academic essay is and what it should be, and exploring the nature of academic writing.

英語による学位論文執筆に備えるため、学期を通じて英作文のトレーニングを行う。具体的には、予習範囲を読解の上で（毎回約3時間）、指定された回に300 wordsほどの英語によるレスポンス・ペーパーの執筆（毎回約1時間）を義務づける。提出されたペーパーはその都度添削の上で返却する。また、学期末レポートも英語で書くことを必須とする。

アメリカ文学の精読を通じて、語学的に正確に読解することはもちろん、作品の背後にある歴史的・文化的コンテクストに留意しながら作品解釈することを目指す。

Nathaniel Hawthorne, The Blithedale Romance (1852)を読解する。同時代の文学者たち（メルヴィル、エマソン、ソローら）と比べ、ホーソーンは奴隷制廃止運動をはじめとして、社会改革と距離を取り続けた作家である。Brook Farmというユートピア共同体の建設とその挫折という事実に基づく本作は、ホーソーンの社会改革に対する視座を理解するのに有用なだけでなく、超絶主義をはじめとするニューイングランドの知的風土を知る手掛かりにもなるだろう。
この作品は多面的なアプローチが可能なテクストであるので、受講生各自の問題意識に沿って独自の読解を目指してほしい。また、作品だけではなく代表的な批評の読解も行い、論文とは何か、論文とはどうあるべきかなどのプラクティカルな問題についても討議する。
