Students in this course will improve their reading comprehension skills through conducting an intensive reading of an American literary work and build their interpretation with a conscious understanding of the work’s background, historical period, and literary contexts.
In this seminar, we will read minor short stories by Herman Melville. While works like “Bartleby” and “Benito Cereno” are essential for anyone studying American literature and are widely read, many of Melville's other minor short stories are also worth reading. In this course, we will closely examine works such as “The Bell-Tower,” “The Paradise of Bachelors and the Tartarus of Maids,” “Jimmy Rose," and “The Piazza" (please note that the selected works may change slightly).
In addition to the literary texts, we will also engage with representative critical readings, discussing practical issues such as what an academic essay is and what it should be, and exploring the nature of academic writing.

英語による学位論文執筆に備えるため、学期を通じて英作文のトレーニングを行う。具体的には、予習範囲を読解の上で（毎回約3時間）、指定された回に300 wordsほどの英語によるレスポンス・ペーパーの執筆（毎回約1時間）を義務づける。提出されたペーパーはその都度添削の上で返却する。また、学期末レポートも英語で書くことを必須とする。

アメリカ文学の精読を通じて、語学的に正確に読解することはもちろん、作品の背後にある歴史的・文化的コンテクストに留意しながら作品解釈することを目指す。

Herman Melvilleによるマイナーな短編作品を読解する。“Bartleby”や“Benito Cereno”などはアメリカ文学を志すうえでは必読の作品であり、一般にも広く読まれてはいるが、他のマイナーな短編作品も読み応えのあるものが多い。本授業では“The Bell-Tower,” “The Paradise of Bachelors and the Tartarus of Maids,” “Jimmy Rose,” “The Piazza”などを精読する（取り上げる作品には多少の変更がありうる）。
さらに、本授業では作品だけではなく代表的な批評の読解も行い、論文とは何か、論文とはどうあるべきかなどのプラクティカルな問題についても討議する。本授業は研究論文の書き方・読み方についての導入ともなるだろう。
