This graduate seminar picks up a work considered an "American classic," and, referring to the extant criticisms concerning the work, tries to find a new way of evaluating it and newly locating it in American literary history. The works published before 1900 will be chosen in Spring Semesters, while in Autumn Semesters, the works published after 1900. For the first semester, the class will take up Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.
The format of each class will consist of a verbal report concerning the preassigned part of the work from a designated student, followed by the whole class reexamining his/her report. The reporter is required to prepare a relatively detailed summary of the assigned part, point out issues that others are likely to encounter, and lead the other participants into discussing problems related to the above-mentioned objective of this seminar.

要領よくまとまったアメリカ文学史をまずは（できたら数冊）通読し、一冊は手元においてその都度確認を行うことを勧めます。古典的名著を取り上げるので翻訳はたいてい幾種類か存在します。翻訳に理解を助けてもらうことは構いませんが、研究者になろうという大学院生なのですから、その出来について批判的に眺めることも忘れずにいるのが大事です。

アメリカ文学の古典と目される作品を毎学期１冊ずつ取り上げ、その文学史上の評価を批評等のうちに参照しつつ、新たな解釈の可能性について探求しましょう。春学期は1900年までの作品、秋学期は1900年以降の作品をとりあげることにします。第1回目はMark Twainの代表作Adventures of Huckleberry Finnを取り上げます。

授業方法は、毎回、あらかじめ指定された作品に関する担当者による報告に引き続き、参加者全員で作品を再吟味します。担当者は割り振られた作品の比較的詳細な要約を作成し、小説読解上の種々の問題点を指摘した上、上記授業の目的に関する議論へと参加者を誘導できるような準備をおこなっておくことが求められます。
