This course will closely examine Henry James's texts from the middle phase (1880s-90s). A pioneer of psychological realism and a consummator of the American novel, James is a classic writer of undiminished interest. By examining his social fictions, this course intends to excavate various critical possibilities they cloak.
Novels of Henry James (1843-1916) have been interpreted along axes centered on issues such as aesthetics, morality, authorial subjectivity, and social consciousness as well as self-consciousness emerging in the context of primarily international situations. However, in recent years, his works have been actively reappraised from more politically controversial perspectives that inform such themes as racial consciousness, gender norms, virtual sexual desire, class resentment, poverty, violence, and nationalism. In this respect, his work is still a goldmine, stimulating us to explore the potential realities of human beings in the 21st century. This class aims to read his short stories and a novella from the middle phase, which have traditionally been regarded as unsuccessful products of a lost cause, so to speak. We will investigate how the author depicts the human psyche and social manners, which are thought to be factors stimulating socio-political interests. By utilizing knowledge and insights acquired through the course, students are supposed to write a high-quality research paper on the assigned texts and submit that to an appropriate journal.

心理主義リアリズムの探究者であり、アメリカ小説の完成者として衰えぬ関心を集める古典的作家、Henry Jamesの中期（1880-90年代）の小説を精読し、風俗小説とそこに宿る様々な批評的命題を考察する。

Henry James（1843-1916）は、審美性、道徳性、国際移動を背景に生起する人間の社会意識と自意識の問題を中心とした軸で解釈されてきたが、近年では人種意識、性規範意識、階級意識、貧困、暴力、ナショナリズムなど、より政治的に論争的なテーマから盛んに読み直されている。この点からも、彼の作品は、21世紀の現在においてなお一層、再読の価値を有しているといえるだろう。この授業では、従来、迷走気味であるとされてきた中期の短編小説の講読を中心に、そのような政治社会的な観点からの「再読」を刺激している要因と思われる、作家の「人心」と「風俗」の描きかたを検証する。受講者は、本講を通して得た知識を援用し、各自、出版を目指した完成度の高い研究論文を作成することが望まれる。
