【授業の目標 / Course Objectives】

この科目は、20世紀アメリカ文学を代表する作家ウィリアム・フォークナーの傑作『八月の光』(1932年)の検討を通して、文学・文化研究の分野における研究方法を身につけることを目標とする。

Through the examination of William Faulkner's major novel, Light in August (1932), this course aims to familiarize students with basic research methods in the fields of literary and cultural studies.

【授業の内容 / Course Contents】

この授業では、ウィリアム・フォークナーの主要作品『八月の光』を、いくつかの重要な学術論文と組みあわせて読む。『八月の光』は、アラバマからやってきた娘リーナ、孤児院育ちのクリスマス、元牧師のハイタワーの物語が、ジェファソンという町で重なり一つになっていく重層的な構造をもつ。この作品には、一見、二項対立――光と影、白人と黒人、信仰と逸脱――が満ち溢れているが、登場人物たちの人生、とりわけ自身の人種アイデンティティが白人か黒人かわからないというクリスマスの人生は、こうした既存の二項対立を解体してしまうようである。本作品において、人種が主要テーマの一つであることは間違いないが、それだけで理解できる作品でもない。学生各自が知的関心にしたがってアプローチをみつけ、独自の切り口から論文を執筆することを目指す。授業は学生のレジュメと発表に基づいて、進められる。

The course will read William Faulkner's major novel,Light in August (1932), pairing with several important scholarly papers. [Light in August has a multilayered structure in which the stories of Lena, Christmas, and Hightower converge in the town of Jefferson. Though the novel seems saturated with binary oppositions—light/shadow, white/black, and faith/transgression—the lives of its characters, especially Christmas, whose racial identity remains uncertain, seem to dismantle these established dichotomies. Race is undoubtedly a central theme in Light in August, but the novel cannot be understood solely through the lens of race. Students are encouraged to find their own approach based on their intellectual interests and to write their papers from a unique perspective. Class will proceed based on student résumés and presentations.
