【授業の目標 / Course Objectives】

アメリカの文学を精読することで，その審美的な手触りを確かめるとともに，人種・ジェンダー・セクシュアリティの歴史的・文化的諸相を探り，日英両言語による自己表現能力を養う。

By reading American literary works, we will not only experience the aesthetic feeling they provide but also explore the historical and cultural aspects of race, gender, and sexuality. In doing so, we will cultivate self-expression skills in both Japanese and English.

【授業の内容 / Course Contents】

　20世紀の冷戦期以降急速に発展したアメリカのScience Fictionは、しかし、19世紀にその起源を持っている。H. Bruce Franklinは、Future Perfect: American Science Fiction of the Nineteenth Centuryと題するアンソロジーを編み、HawthorneやMelvilleの短編作品のうちにもSF的な要素が宿っていることを指摘した。このコースでは、アメリカ最初のSF小説とも称されるGeorge TuckerのA Voyage to the Moon (1827)と、Edgar Allan Poeの古典的なSF作品を精読し、それらのテクストが、テクノロジーや資本主義の進歩にいかなる可能性と不安を見出していたのか考える。
　なお，授業は，あらかじめ指名された担当者による英語の発表を出発点に，前半は英語，後半は日本語によるディスカッション形式で行うので，受講者の積極的な発言が期待される。

　Science fiction, which rapidly developed in the United States during the Cold War era of the 20th century, actually traces its origins back to the 19th century. H. Bruce Franklin, in his anthology titled Future Perfect: American Science Fiction of the Nineteenth Century, highlighted the presence of science fiction elements even in the short stories of Nathaniel Hawthorne and Herman Melville. In this course, we will conduct a close reading of A Voyage to the Moon (1827) by George Tucker—often referred to as the first American science fiction novel—and the classic science fiction works of Edgar Allan Poe, exploring how these texts envisioned both the potential and anxieties associated with advancements in technology and capitalism.
　Please note that the English presentation by the designated presenter will be followed by a Q&A session in English during the first half and in Japanese during the second half of the class. Therefore, students are expected to actively contribute to class discussions.

とりわけ授業前半の英語によるディスカッションに積極的な貢献ができるよう，毎週，事前にテクストを精読するとともに，自分の問題意識を整理し，それをメモにまとめたうえで授業にのぞむこと。各回の予習には4時間以上を要する。
