This course focuses on a close reading of Sir Thomas Malory's Le Morte Darthur (1469), a cornerstone of Arthurian literature, using the Field edition (2013, 2017). The primary goal is to develop students' ability to interpret Malory's work through improved proficiency in reading Middle English (ME). Japanese scholars have made remarkable contributions to the Malory studies. By examining key debates surrounding Malory's texts, students will gain an understanding of the critical history of Le Morte Darthur and explore research methodologies. The course serves as an introduction to Arthurian studies, equipping students with foundational skills for further exploration of this rich literary tradition.
Malory’s works exist in two forms: the Caxton edition and the Winchester manuscript. This course uses the Field edition, a groundbreaking text that integrates the latest research, comparing and editing Malory's work alongside the original sources he relied on. It is considered closer to the original than the earlier Vinaver-Field edition (1990). Students will learn the fundamentals of reading Middle English texts, utilizing textual commentaries, a Middle English dictionary, and facsimile editions of the Winchester manuscript and Caxton edition. We will also examine key scholarly debates between Japanese and Western researchers that significantly shaped Malory studies, gaining insight into the textual history of Le Morte Darthur and developing essential research methodologies.
The spring semester will explore Arthur's birth and the formation of the Round Table, while the fall semester will focus on episodes like “Lancelot and Elaine" and the “Final Battle." The choice of episodes may be adjusted based on class interests. Through close readings, the course aims to deepen students' appreciation of Malory’s storytelling and prepare them for advanced studies in Arthurian literature.

英文学のアーサー王物語の金字塔トマス・マロリー『アーサー王の死』（Sir Thomas Malory, Le Morte Darthur, 1469）をField版（2013、2017）で精読し、マロリーの作品を解釈できるような中英語（ME）の読解力を養うことを第一の目標とします。Malory学の成立の過程には日本の研究者の目覚ましい貢献がありました。マロリーのテクストをめぐる論争を例に、マロリーの批評史と研究手法を学び、アーサー王研究の導入とすることを第二の目標とします。

マロリーのテクストにはCaxton版とWinchester写本の二つの流れが存在します。本講座で使用するField版は両テクストの最新研究の成果を取り入れ、マロリーが依拠した原典と比較対照・校訂・編集した画期的なテクストです。これまでの決定版ヴィナーヴァ・フィールド（Vinaver-Field）版(1990)よりもさらに原作に近いとされます。詳細な注釈や中英語辞典、Winchester写本とCaxton版のファクシミリ版など必要に応じて活用し、中英語テクストの読解方法の基本を学びます。またField版成立にも貢献した日本のマロリー研究者が英米の研究者と展開した一連の論争を英語論文で読み、その実例を検討しながらテクスト批評史のみならず、論証のための研究手法を学びます。ひいては今後のアーサー王研究へとつなげてほしいと願っています。春学期にはアーサー王誕生から円卓騎士団の形成への物語を扱い、秋学期に物語終盤の珠玉のエピソード「ランスロットとエレイン」から「最後の戦い」への完結編を精読する予定ですが、履修者の情況によって、他のエピソードを扱うこともあります。最新のテクストを用いた精読によって、マロリーの語りの妙を堪能してください。
