The general objective of this course is to read and understand Simon Horobin's Does Spelling Matter? and to understand the development of English spelling. There are many mysteries around the spelling of Present-Day English, and to be able to explain some of the mysteries using technical terms in English and General Linguistics and Historical Comparative Linguistics is the concrete aim of this course.
In this course we read Simon Horobin's Does English Matter? as a textbook. We deal with the writing systems of the European languages, the spelling in Old Englsh, and in Middle English. During the first five weeks Koike will give a presentation of the contents of the textbook, and after that students will present, followed by in-class discussions.

英語のスペリングは一貫性がなくとても覚えづらいと言われますが、英語の歴史を紐解き、個々の単語のスペリングを説明できるようになると、分かりづらいスペリングに愛着が湧きます！楽しく、真剣に学びましょう。
Simon Horobin（著）Does Spelling Matter?を読み解き、英語のスペリングの歴史を紐解き、英語の歴史を通じてスペリングがどのように発達し、現在のような大変複雑なスペリングの体系が生まれたのかを理解することが授業の大きな目標です。現代英語に見られる英語のスペリング上の様々な「不思議」を、英語学、一般言語学、歴史言語学の専門用語を用いて説明できるようになることが具体的な目的です。

この授業では、Simon Horobin（著）Does English Matter?をテキストとし、ヨーロッパ諸言語の書記体系について、古英語のスペリング、中英語の書記体系までを扱います。毎回の授業は、最初の５週間までは小池による講義を中心に進め、以降は受講者が発表し、その後クラス内でディスカッションを行います。
