The purpose of this course is to understand the ethnic and regional diversity of the Anglo-Saxon society, and the extent to which the culture, society, and the language of the ancient “Britons” survived not only in Wales and north-west England but also in Midland, using the documents in Old English and Latin. We follow Lindy Brady’s Writing the Welsh Borderlands in Anglo-Saxon England (2017) as a main textbook.
In this course the first four weeks will be lectures dealing with the general outline of the arrival of the Britons into the British Isles, Roman Britain, and the coming of the Anglo-Saxons and their interaction with the Britons. Then we move onto the textbook, dealing with Chapters 1, 2, and 3.

この授業では、古英語だけでなく、ラテン語資料、部分的に古ウェールズ語の資料も扱います。また、言語だけでなく、アングロサクソン時代の歴史・社会の知識も必要となります。言語だけでなく、歴史、文化に関連する資料も調べて、本テキストの内容を深く理解していきましょう。

古英語の話されていたアングロサクソン社会が民族的に、また地域的に実に多様であり、地域によって先住民族の古代ブリテン人の社会・文化・言語が、ウェールズ、北西イングランドだけでなく、イングランド中央部（ミッドランド）においても長く息づいていたことを、古英語またはラテン語資料を元に検証し、理解することが目標である。テキストとして、Lindy Brady著 Writing the Welsh Borderlands in Anglo-Saxon England (2017)の前半（最初の３章）を使用する。
