This class aims to reevaluate key issues in historical studies through comprehensive reading of Japanese translations of seminal and influential works that have led to major shifts in historical interpretations. It also strives to develop the ability to place one’s own research topic and its significance within a broader intellectual context.
Edward Said’s Orientalism: Western Conceptions of the Orient will be read closely in class. The goal is to proceed at a pace of one section per session; during close reading, students will also investigate the individuals and works mentioned throughout the text and accumulate background knowledge necessary for understanding the argument's context and exposition. Participants are required to prepare a written summary for each session.

歴史観の転換をもたらした問題の書・名著の日本語訳を読破することを通して、歴史学の課題について改めて考察し、自身の研究テーマとその意義について大きな視点から位置づける能力を獲得することを目的とする。
This class aims to reevaluate key issues in historical studies through comprehensive reading of Japanese translations of seminal and influential works that have led to major shifts in historical interpretations. エドワード・サイード『オリエンタリズム』を講読する。1回につき1節ずつ読み進めることを目標にするが、精読にあたって随所に言及される人物や書物の内容についても調べ、叙述の背景についての知識を蓄積してゆく。受講者は、毎回レジュメを作成する。
