The first half of this course focuses on the UNESCO World Heritage sites in Southeast Asia, especially those consisting of archaeological sites. The aims and significance of promoting archaeological sites as World Heritage are discussed in detail,taking each particular historical and cultural circumstances into account. The second half of this course focuses on sea mammal hunting in the northern part of Japanese archipelago. We will understand how sea mammal hunting, which has become unfamiliar to modern Japanese, has been involved in people’s lives since prehistoric times.
In the first half of the course, firstly, the outline of the system of UNESCO World Heritage is reviewed. Then, six World Heritage sites of Southeast Asia with archaeological sites as main components are focused. The relationship between the archaeological sites and modern society is argued from various perspectives, including an overview of each archaeological site itself, the aim and the process towards the registration by UNESCO, changes caused by registration, and so on. Based on the lectures, discussion among students is held. In the second half of the class, the archaeological framework of northern Japan, which is different from that of Honshu, will be first explained. Then, tracing back from modern to Jomon period, we will trace how the techniques and purposes of sea mammal hunting changed over time.

授業の前半では、ユネスコ世界遺産に登録された東南アジアの考古遺跡に注目する。各国の歴史的・文化的脈絡と現代社会の価値観を背景に、考古遺跡がどのように位置づけられ、活用されてきたか考察する。授業の後半では、日本列島北部において展開した海獣（海にすむ哺乳類）狩猟に焦点を当てる。海獣狩猟は現代日本社会ではなじみが薄い存在になっているが、先史時代以降どのように人々の生活に関わってきたのかを理解する。

授業の前半では、まず世界遺産の仕組みについて概説し、続いて各論として東南アジアの世界遺産6件を取り上げる。いずれも考古遺跡が世界遺産の重要な構成要素となっている事例である。遺跡自体の概説、世界遺産登録への経緯、登録後の変化など、多様な視点から現代社会と遺跡の関わりを考察する。講義をふまえてディスカッションを行う。授業の後半では、まず本州とは異なる北方考古学の枠組みを説明した上で、現代から縄文時代まで時代を遡りながら、海獣狩猟の技術や目的が時代と共にどのように変化したのかをたどる。
