【授業の目標 / Course Objectives】

今期は、想像力を培うアートのあり方を通して教育の現状に対する批判的なレビューを行い、民主的なコミュニティと創造的な人間を育む教育の在り方について検討する。履修者には、教育の現状に対する批判的で、想像的な眼差しを持つための基本的な知識の獲得をすることが目標となる。

This term, we will conduct a critical review of the current state of education by examining the role of art in cultivating imagination, and consider the ideal form of education that fosters democratic communities and creative individuals.　The goal for students is to acquire the basic knowledge to have a critical and imaginative perspective on the current state of education.

【授業の内容 / Course Contents】

基本テキストとして、Greene, M. (1995). Releasing the imagination: Essay on education, the arts, and social change. San Francisco, CA: Jossey-Bass.を取り上げ、本書を輪読することで、教育、芸術、社会変革について議論する。なお、本書は授業開始前に翻訳出版が予定されているため、そちらを購読テキストとする。グリーンは著名な教育哲学者であり、女性としてこの分野を開拓した人物の一人としてよく知られている。1981年にはアメリカ教育学会(AERA)の会長に女性として初めてなった人物でもある。彼女は本書で、芸術が想像力を解き放ち、新たな視点を開くためにどのように活用できるかを示す。想像力とは、ある物事に対して別の可能性を拓くものとして眺め直す能力であり、そうした力を養うことが教育されるべきであると考える。従って、想像力は、能動的な学習、可能性の開拓、そして「問題提起」（フレイレ）へとつながるものである。また、想像力を欠如することが創造力の欠如、さらにはコミュニティへの参加能力の欠如につながるとも指摘し、民主的なコミュニティの創造に向けた想像力の重要性を述べている。こうした眼差しは、学校だけでなく、コミュニティの再構築、人間の再生を考える時、貴重な示唆を与えるものである。現在の社会や教育の在り方に何となく不満を持つが、それをどのように言い表したらよいのかわからない人、あるいは問題は明確であってもそれをどのように打破したらよいのか悩んでいる人には是非履修することを勧める。他大学院、他研究科、他専攻の大学院生の履修も歓迎する。

We will use Greene, M. (1995). Releasing the imagination: Essay on education, the arts, and social change. San Francisco, CA: Jossey-Bass. as the basic textbook, and will discuss education, the arts, and social change through reading this book in a group. As this book is scheduled to be published in translation before the start of the class, we will use that as the textbook. Green is a well-known educational philosopher and one of the first women to have pioneered this field. In 1981, she became the first woman to be elected president of the American Educational Research Association (AERA). In this book, she shows how art can be used to unlock the imagination and open up new perspectives. She believes that imagination is the ability to see things in a different way, and that this ability should be nurtured through education. Therefore, imagination leads to active learning, the development of possibilities, and “posing problem” (Freire). She also points out that a lack of imagination leads to a lack of creativity and a lack of ability to participate in the community, and she discusses the importance of imagination in creating a democratic community. This perspective provides valuable suggestions not only for schools, but also for the reconstruction of communities and the regeneration of human beings. I recommend this course to anyone who is vaguely dissatisfied with the current state of society and education, but doesn't know how to express their dissatisfaction, or who is worried about how to overcome a clear problem. I also welcome graduate students from other graduate schools, other departments, and other majors to take this course.
