【Course Objectives】

The course will study human development and learning from a socio-cultural-historical approach. In particular, this term will examine "learning as social environment design. Traditionally, learning has been considered an individual process in psychology and pedagogy. However, actual learning occurs in the context of social and material entanglements and cannot be captured by analyses that focus only on the internal psychological processes of individuals. The inherent social nature of learning indicates that academic ability, intelligence, and personality, which have been viewed as matters of individual ability, are social. Unfortunately, social justice is not guaranteed in today's society, which makes people peripheral and maintains and renews social disadvantages. Inequality and injustice in education are behind international conflicts and wars. Students are expected to recognize this current situation and to envision a new social environment design to see how social justice in learning can be achieved.

【Course Contents】

The class will critically review the literature on "learning as social environment design" to learn about the current state of contemporary society, education, learning, and social injustice. In addition, we will also have research reports by students, data sessions, and research discussions with overseas researchers and other guests as needed. Students must submit a summary report at the end of the class.
