【Course Objectives】

Generally speaking, art is seen as a special activity that takes place outside the framework of everyday life. However, the reality is the opposite: art is embedded in various activities of everyday life, and each person can be said to live with art as their own unique survival technique. In this class, we will question the relationship between art and society based on a re-examination of this concept of art. A re-examination of the concept of art and a re-weaving of the relationship between art and society should bring about changes in the way people live and their sense of happiness. I would like to imagine a new world together with the students, while flexibly discussing the relationships between multiple agents such as art, society, and the self, which do not necessarily have a linear relationship. If you are interested in such things, I would like you to participate, even if you have not been involved in various issues related to so-called art, psychology, education, and society. Being aware of what you don't know or understand is important for new thinking. By having students acquire the basic knowledge needed to reexamine the relationship between art and society, we hope to create a foundation for them to develop the above themes in relation to their own research topics.

【Course Contents】

Read and discuss common issue literature related to the theme. Guest talks, including those given by overseas guests, and field trips to related fields are also conducted. When necessary, students' research reports and data sessions will also be held as needed. Students are expected to report on the common theme papers on a rotating basis, so please take sufficient time to prepare in advance. A summary report will be submitted after the class to confirm understanding. First of all, we will begin with a text by Pablo El Guerra, written as a textbook on socially engaged art, which introduces the teaching and practice of artists who seek to make the world a better place through social participation. However, since this is a small-scale exercise, it will actually be finalized in consultation with the participating students. Graduate students from other graduate schools, other graduate departments, and other majors are also welcome to enroll.
